"un paese per museo" means a country or place for museums
Scontrone was founded by the Samnite tribe, rugged mountain dwellers who were the last to hold out against the conquest of the Roman Empire. The isolated hilltop was a strategic outpost during invasions and protected the people of the region.

Situated at 3,406 ft., Scontrone still gives the feeling of sanctuary from the bombardment of modern living. Walking through winding passageways, up and down this hillside town, takes you far away from daily cares. Throughout the town are recent sculptures and murals depicting culture, history and ambiance of life in Scontrone. The piazza overlooks the valley below with its patchwork of farmland and view of the other half of this settlement, Villa Scontrone.

During the month of July, this charming town is host to the International Museum of Women in Art. Each year, the pieces that are donated have given the town an outstanding collection of vision, culture and life experiences of women artists from all over the world.

Nature plays an enormous part of life here as do the excavations and fossils housed in the paleontology museum. The most curious display is a deer-like animal with 5 horns. Whether you seek the unusual or the charm and rich culture, this is one of many places you will find both.

The church bells ring, it's six o'clock in the morning and the small town begins to wake up. You stand at the window and watch the sun creep over the distant hills.

Pink hazy light fills the horizon; within minutes, patches of green come to life in the valley below. The piazza fills with people greeting each other as they head off to work or school.
